Introduction to Stochastic Models in Biology

چکیده
This chapter is concerned with continuous time processes, which are often modeled as a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). These models assume that the observed dynamics are driven exclusively by internal, deterministic mechanisms. However, real biological systems will always be exposed to influences that are not completely understood or not feasible to model explicitly. Ignoring these phenomena in the modeling may affect the analysis of the studied biological systems. Therefore there is an increasing need to extend the deterministic models to models that embrace more complex variations in the dynamics. A way of modeling these elements is by including stochastic influences or noise. A natural extension of a deterministic differential equations model is a system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), where relevant parameters are modeled as suitable stochastic processes, or stochastic processes are added to the driving system equations. This approach assumes that the dynamics are partly driven by noise. All biological dynamical systems evolve under stochastic forces, if we define stochasticity as the parts of the dynamics that we either cannot predict or understand or that we choose not to include in the explicit modeling. To be realistic, models of biological systems should include random influences, since they are concerned with subsystems of the real world that cannot be sufficiently isolated from effects external to the model. The physiological justification to include erratic behaviors

Numerical Solution of Weakly Singular Ito-Volterra Integral Equations via Operational Matrix Method based on Euler Polynomials
Introduction Many problems which appear in different sciences such as physics, engineering, biology, applied mathematics and different branches can be modeled by using deterministic integral equations. Weakly singular integral equation is one of the principle type of integral equations which was introduced by Abel for the first time. These problems are often dependent on a noise source which a...
متن کاملOn Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models
There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...
متن کاملLiu Estimates and Influence Analysis in Regression Models with Stochastic Linear Restrictions and AR (1) Errors
In the linear regression models with AR (1) error structure when collinearity exists, stochastic linear restrictions or modifications of biased estimators (including Liu estimators) can be used to reduce the estimated variance of the regression coefficients estimates. In this paper, the combination of the biased Liu estimator and stochastic linear restrictions estimator is considered to overcom...
متن کاملApplication of Stochastic Optimal Control, Game Theory and Information Fusion for Cyber Defense Modelling
The present paper addresses an effective cyber defense model by applying information fusion based game theoretical approaches. In the present paper, we are trying to improve previous models by applying stochastic optimal control and robust optimization techniques. Jump processes are applied to model different and complex situations in cyber games. Applying jump processes we propose some m...
متن کاملBehavioral study of piston manufacturing plant through stochastic models
Piston plays a vital role in almost all types of vehicles. The present study discusses the behavioral study of a piston manufacturing plant. Manufacturing plants are complex repairable systems and therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the performance of a piston manufacturing plant using stochastic models. The stochastic model is an efficient performance evaluator for repairable systems. In...
متن کاملAn extension of stochastic differential models by using the Grunwald-Letnikov fractional derivative
Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) have been applied by engineers and economists because it can express the behavior of stochastic processes in compact expressions. In this paper, by using Grunwald-Letnikov fractional derivative, the stochastic differential model is improved. Two numerical examples are presented to show efficiency of the proposed model. A numerical optimization approach b...
